Abstract:

Original cartoon drawings executed for publication in the California Pelican, and clippings of various published cartoons from this source. Also includes later original woodcut prints, chiefly portraits, subjects of which include Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Irving Israel, Stanley Koppel, Roy Ragle, John Connolly, Bill Brown, Tony Brown, Frank Dolan, Wilfred Owen and William Wolff himself. Also includes exhibition announcements, a catalog of a retrospective exhibition of Wolff's works, and other ephemera; a woodcut printing block (portrait of Stanley Koppel); and two issues of the California Pelican (October 1947 and March 1949) featuring cartoons by Wolff.

William Wolff (1922-2004), San Francisco-based woodcut specialist; born in San Francisco; attended University of California, Berkeley (B.A. 1950, M.A. 1951), where his cartoons appeared in the California Pelican; studied at San Francisco School of Fine Arts (later named the San Francisco Art Institute); studied with Max Beckmann at Mills College; affiliated with the Graphic Arts Workshop; taught at the San Francisco Unified School District's Youth Guidance Center (1957-1983); served as president of the California Society of Printmakers (1988-1990).
The California Pelican was a humor magazine published by the Associated Students of the University of California, Berkeley.
